Canton is located just 10 miles from Interstate 29 on US Highway 18. Our community is approximately 30 miles south of Sioux Falls. Our community has a population of approximately 3,100. The citizens have access to affordable homes, one of the finest education systems in the state, full service hospital, the top five industries in the county, five parks, and several churches of varying denominations. The cost of living in Canton is very affordable. Homes range from $50,000 to $135,000 on average. New housing is in the process of being developed around the city including northeast of the city. We also offer one of the lowest property taxes in the state, this makes living in Canton a great value. Canton is also the county seat of Lincoln County. Living in South Dakota assures you of a having a variety of weather. The average temperature in Canton; January - 22.9, April - 56.1, July - 86.2, and October - 62.1. The winter brings the opportunity for skiing, snow boarding, ice skating and ice fishing. Newton Hills State Park's Lake Lakota, Big Sioux River, and Lake Alvin keep the anglers busy catching their limit year around. Newton Hills also offers camping, picnicking, as well as horseback riding, nature trails, cross country skiing throughout the park. In October comes one of the biggest outdoor events in the state, the opening of Pheasant season. Hunters from around the United States and foreign countries converge on the state to try their luck at getting their limit.
Our city hosts many recreation festivals and events. In July the Canton Car Show features up to 900 entries. The car show also includes cruise night and a dance. The Big Sioux River Folk Festival in August attracts approximately 5,000. Many come and stay for the three day festival. The next big festival in October features our Norwegian heritage. The Scandinavian Festival has mouth watering authentic foods, entertainment, handmade crafts, and displays. In December the Canton Optimist Club sponsors a Christmas Parade. After viewing these beautiful homes, stop in the downtown business district and browse some of our unique shops, several of these are feature antiques. Shoppers from miles around come to spend the day "teeking".
Our children are a priority in Canton, so we have created an excellent school system. The Canton School District is a fully accredited Class 1 school by the South Dakota North Central Association and Colleges. It is only one of ten school districts to achieve this in the state. Canton's enrollment is approximately 1,000 students. The school district is made up of a new technology enhanced high school, one middle school adjacent to the high school, and two elementary schools. Canton has 40 teachers employed as well as support staff. These instructors teach a complete course schedule including five years of math, four years of Science, three years of a foreign language, four years of English, four years of Social Studies, and four years of General shop and Occupational Agriculture. As part of the curriculum, students as early a kindergarten begin using computers. Canton schools have a ratio of one computer per child. We offer health care for all ages in Canton. Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital is a licensed 22 bed hospital. Which includes Hiawatha Heights a 12 unit assisted living community. Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital is part of the Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System. Canton also has a clinic adjacent to the hospital. Sioux Valley Clinic-Canton Family Physicians has been apart of the community since 1992. The Good Samaritan Center has been remodeled and is licensed to care for 64 persons. Keystone Treatment Center offers rehabilitation for substance abuse, alcoholism, gambling, and other related issues. Dental care is offered here by Canton Family Dental. Canton is home to five industries. Adams Thermal Systems produces engin cooling systems for on or off highway vehical applications. They employ 280 residents. Another employer is Bid-Well Division of CMI Corporation. Bid-Well specializes in concrete paving equipment. This Canton business employs 66 people. Johnson Feed Inc. distributes a wide range of salt products, as well as baler twine, tires and other items. Their trucking division covers 48 states. Fastek Products and its division, Midwest Molding is owned and operated in Canton. This company employs about 70 people. Fastek specialize in die cast items, plastic injection molding, and parts for the window industry. Recently Framers Supply Company has made the decision to move their facilities to Canton. Framers Supply Company is the upper Midwest's leading wholesale supplier to the picture framing trade. They sell to businesses actively engaged in picture framing or a closely related trade. The area has 10 religious facilities. These facilities are a variety of denominations. These denominations include Assembly of God, Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, Free Lutheran, Methodist and Reformed. Some of the churches date back as far as the 1880's.
Our community has several restaurants for you to dine and relax. The Black Angus Steak house offers an extensive menu featuring locally raised Black Angus Beef, as well as seafood. For more casual dinning we also have sandwich shops, fast food and a locally owned cafe, Laurie's, which offers home cooking.
